Winter 2012
Abstract Line Design - Color Pencil
Our first major drawing project focused on the application of the elements and principles of design into an abstract design. Students were expected to use at least 12 types of line in order to create a unified composition with an obvious focal point.
Contour Line - Watercolor Painting
We studied continuous contour line drawing in order to observe the contours within forms. We also learned about Georgia O'Keeffe, and her large, detailed compositions which depicted natural forms. Students then used the contour line technique to create watercolor paintings.
Charcoal Shading - White Forms
The culmination of our shading unit was an observational drawing using charcoal. The students practiced shading with charcoal, created thumbnail sketches to select the best composition, and finally, created their final piece on toned paper. They added shadows using charcoal, and removed highlights, using an eraser.
