Fall 2018 Art and Design
Abstract Line Design
Our first major drawing project focused on the application of the elements and principles of design into an abstract design. Students were expected to use at least 10 types of line in order to create a unified composition with an obvious focal point.
Continuous Contour Line
The students learned the continuous contour line drawing technique. They carefully observed objects, then showed the internal and external details with one connected line.
Observational Drawing
Students practiced shading with pencil and charcoal in various exercises. They applied these skills to an observational photorealism drawing, based on a photograph taken by the student. Students used ebony pencil for this project.
Expressive Self Portraits
Students researched portrait artists such as Amy Sherald, Richard Shimomura, Kehinde Wiley, Peter Max, Frida Kahlo, and Yayoi Kusama for inspiration for their expressive self portraits. They considered what they wanted to reveal about themselves through expression, pose, color scheme, clothing/accessories, and other symbols.
